What is a Cooperative landowner group?

A cooperative landowner group is defined as a group of landowners who choose to work together on important issues in their area. Landowners who organize are able to accomplish more as a group than as individual entities. As noxious weeds continue to cause increasingly negative environmental and economic impacts more and more landowner groups are choosing to coordinate their weed management efforts to control weeds in their area. To find landowner groups in your area that are involved with land management and to read weed updates for your area refer to our interactive Weed Management Area map.

How does belonging to a cooperative landowner group benefit me?

Landowner groups form for a variety of reasons. Whether your group is a homeowners association that deals with issues in your neighborhood, a watershed group that works on river access and aquifer protection or a natural resource council that works on land use issues; by becoming involved with a group you are a part of the decisions that guide your community. As an organized group it is much easier to approach and work with large public agencies or private commercial landowners. There are also a variety of funding resources are available for landowner groups. If you are already spending money on land management that benefits your community (eg. weed control, forest thinning, habitat restoration or education) chances are there is a grant available that would reimburse some or all of your expenses.

Why should my landowner group care about noxious weeds?

Noxious weeds pose a catastrophic threat to Montana’s economy and environment. Noxious weeds are altering ecosystems, reducing cropland and rangeland productivity, negatively impacting wildlife habitat, and threatening survival of native plant and animal species. Unfortunately, all of Missoula County either has a noxious weed problem or is threatened by noxious weed invasion. If you care about Montana’s environment and economy should practice good land management and control noxious weeds. The Missoula County Weed District provides organizational and technical assistance to cooperative landowner groups in Missoula County that have integrated weed management as one of their goals.
