What is the Montana Noxious Weed Trust Fund Grant Program?
The Montana Noxious Weed Trust Fund Grant Program
is a grant program established in 1985 by the Montana Legislature to
provide cost-share funding for the development and implementation of
weed management programs in Montana. The Noxious Weed Trust Fund is
financed primarily through a tax on vehicle registrations and although
available funding varies each fiscal year, the Regular Grant funding is
around 1.8 million dollars.
Who is eligible for funding?
Funding is available for local cooperative landowner groups, government agencies, universities and non-profits across Montana. Noxious Weed trust Fund grants are generally
a great funding source for cooperative landowner groups that have clear vegetation management goals and are motivated to accomplish a large amount work in their area in a
short period of time. A cooperative landowner group needs to have at least three cooperating adjacent landowners interested in implementing an integrated weed management program.
How does it work?
The majority of local cooperative grant proposals are prepared by a
government entity (local weed district, conservation district,
extension office, or university) for cooperative landowner groups. One
of the many services offered by the Missoula County Weed District is to
help cooperative landowner groups prepare Noxious Weed Trust Fund
grants and to oversee reimbursements when a grant is successfully
funded.
The Noxious Weed Trust Fund program is a
cost-share program meaning that the grant participants will be refunded
50% of the project cost. On average grants in Missoula County total
$60,000 per project of which $30,000 is matched by the Noxious Weed
Trust Fund and remaining $30,000 is matched by the grant participants.
The applicant is responsible for paying the costs up front and will be
reimbursed after the project is completed. Groups that are awarded
funding have two growing seasons to spend the money.
How do I get started?
Preparing a Noxious Weed Trust Fund Project can take up to 6 months.
