Convolvulacea or Morningglory Family
Growth Habit: Creeping perennial often climbing or forming dense tangled mats.
Leaves: Dark-green leaves, shaped like arrowheads with sharp pointed lobes, alternate and grow on one side of the stem.
Stems: 1-4 feet long, grows horizontally along the ground or climbing.
Flowers: 1 inch in diameter, tubular or bell-shaped, white to pinkish in color. Flowering period is from late June until frost in the fall.
Roots: Extensive creeping root system that can penetrate the soil to a depth of 20 feet which gives rise to numerous long lateral roots.
Seeds: Four seeds are produced per one small round fruit. Fruit is a small, round capsule. Seeds are viable up to 50 years.
Reproduction: By seed and rhizomes.
Habitat: Disturbed areas, pastures, and cultivated fields.
Handpulling: Not an effective method of control because of the extensive, rhizomatous root system.
Mowing: May reduce the amount of seeds produced by the infestation, but usually grows below the level of most mower blades. Mowing is not an effective method of control.
Biological Control: There have been two bio-control agents released in the U.S. for the control of field bindweed, but they have limited availability in Western Montana. Bio-control is not a recommended method of control for field bindweed in Missoula County.
Grazing: Most livestock will forage on the leaves and stems of field bindweed, but it will not decrease the size of the infestation or its density.
Herbicide: The following herbicides are labelled for field bindweed. Always consult product labels and read them carefully to ensure correct species/land management usage and chemical application.
