Horse Ownership 101
The Horse Ownership Education Series is for anyone who is considering purchasing a horse, whether they are brand new to the horse world, needing a refresher after a few years away, or just wanting to know more about horse ownership. It is organized by Montana Horse Sanctuary and supported by MSU Extension.

Montana Horse Sanctuary is offering the popular Horse Ownership 101 class for the third year in a row, subsidizing the $65 registration cost. Youths (age 12-17) may accompany an adult for an additional $30. Class is limited to 10 participants.
Class 1 – “So, you think you want to buy a horse?”
This class will provide a practical overview of the planning and considerations that any prospective horse owner needs to know to make informed decisions regarding buying a horse.
Planning ahead – information regarding options available for lessons, leasing a horse or purchasing a horse and how to know which is the right option for you.
Financial Considerations – important information to know about the cost of purchasing and caring for a horse as well as being prepared for those unexpected vet bills.
Knowledge – information that will help guide a potential horse owner through the confusing process of buying a horse including: what to purchase, how to read and understand a horse for sale ad, what questions to ask and pitfalls to avoid, and how to protect yourself throughout the process.
Class 2 – “A horse at home”
This class is for anyone who already owns a horse or plans to own a horse now or in the future. You will learn about choosing a boarding facility or preparing to have your horse at home.
How to create a safe, comfortable environment for your horse.
Types and options for fencing, shelter, feeding, pasture, equipment, etc.
Bringing your horse home and what to expect.
Getting to know your horse safely.
Setting you and your horse up for success as you help them transition to a new home.
