Identification

·        Roots: Shallow-rooted, grows roots each season and has the capacity to regenerate from its root system.

·        Leaves: Leaves are mostly located at the base of the plant, have a thin membrane on the inside of the leaf blade at the junction of the leaf sheath and leaf blade.

·        Stems: Lower stems are flattened; upper stems are wiry and round in cross-section. Plants ranged in height from eight to 24 inches.

·        Flowers: The flowering and seed producing portion of the plant is usually dense with a plume-like appearance and a purple base.

·        Seeds/Fruits: Bulblets provide the primary means of reproduction (asexual), each bulblet is a mini plant that can form roots and grow once it falls to the ground.

Found along roadsides, trails, and in open dry sites.

Several herbicides are listed as providing control throughout the plant's growth stage including Clethodium, Glyphosate, Imazapic, Imazapyr, Rimsulfuron, Sulfometuron, Sulfometuron + Chlorsulfuron, Sulfosulfuron, Hexazinone.
