Climate Resiliency Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Climate Change?

Climate Change refers to the persistent changes in average weather conditions, features of the climate system, and the changing risk of certain types of extreme weather events as a result of increased emissions of heat-trapping gases resulting from human activities.

2. What is Global Warming?

Global Warming refers to the increase in the Earth's average temperature due to increased emissions of heat-trapping gases resulting from human activities.

3. What is Climate Variability?

Climate Variability refers to natural changes in climate that fall within the observed range of extremes for a particular region, as measured by temperature, precipitation, and frequency of events. Drivers of climate variability include El Niño and other phenomena.

4. What is Climate Adaptation?

Climate adaptation refers to the adjustment in natural or human systems to a new or changing environment that exploits beneficial opportunities, or moderates negative effects. Adaptations include, (1) increases in preparedness in anticipation of risk, such as developing a drought plan or flood warning plan, or (2) improving roadway drainage and runoff to reduce anticipated flood risks associated with increased numbers of intense precipitation events.

5. What is Climate Mitigation?

Mitigation measures reduce the amount and speed of future climate change by reducing emissions of heat-trapping gases or removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
